Route 33. The Trades of Murieta

Recorrido

We start the circular route from Murieta Town Hall, the former railway station of the Vasco-Navarro Railway. This route aims to bring us closer to the memory of Murieta’s traditional trades, such as lime production, charcoal making and shepherding.

First, we head north to visit two lime kilns: Juan Esteban’s kiln and a recreation of an artisanal lime kiln, where we can learn what lime production was like. A little further on, we reach the Balsa de Murieta pond, which allows us to discover the flora and fauna of the area.

We continue uphill along a wide track to the Tirillas quarry, from which material was extracted for the construction of the Vasco-Navarro railway infrastructure.

Afterwards, a narrow path leads us to Asensio’s corral and the remains of an old shepherds’ hut. We begin to descend and pass beside the recreation of a charcoal kiln and then beside the Roya pond.

Finally, we reach a crossroads, where we can either return to Murieta via the short version of the Trades Route, or continue along the longer route around the Sierra de Lokiz on tracks and paths that lead us to the Gogorra viewpoint, with impressive views over the Ega Valley. Finally, we join the Vasco-Navarro Greenway to return to Murieta.
